Costumes for the Whole Family or a Large Group

We love Halloween in our family, and I love to dress our girls up in great costumes. My mother-in-law is an amazing seamstress and has created some of the best costumes that I have seen from Little Bo Peep and her sheep to a peacock with real peacock feathers! Since we have three girls we have done a few Halloweens where they all matched. Now that our oldest is in third grade, we have to be more creative. She is a lot pickier about her costume and this year she wants to be scary. Hopefully, we can figure something out to make it work; I'm thinking the Addams family might be the best option. Here are a few other ideas of great costumes for families or a large group of friends.

Our Three Angels

Angels and Devil

A few Halloweens ago we dressed up as angels. This was a very easy costume to make. My mother-in-law created the girls dresses and halos and I bought the wings from a costume store. For my costume I just wore a white skirt and top. You can easily dress the kids in a white dress with white stockings and shoes; buy a halo and wings and you have angels. When we all dressed up we had my husband be the devil. I bought him horns and a tail and he wore red. It was the easiest costume and really cute.

The Incredibles and Other Super Heroes

Incredibles Family Costume: This is a great family idea especially if you have three kids - two boys and a girl. My best friend did this a few Halloweens ago and bought the costumes. They probably wouldn't be that difficult to make though.

Super Hero Group Costumes: Dressing up as super heroes is a great idea for a family especially if you have boys. All of these costumes would be great for a small or large family: Batman, Robin, Superman, Wonder Woman, incredible Hulk, The Flash, Captain America, Super Girl, Thor, Iron Man, Green Lantern.

Alice in Wonderland and Three Little Pigs and Big Bad Wolf

Alice in Wonderland Family Costume: This is another costume that would be great for a large family because there are plenty of characters to choose from. Alice and the White Rabbit are the two most important costumes, but you could also have the Queen of Hearts, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, the March Hare and Mouse, the King, the Cards, The Catepillar, and of course, the Cheshire Cat!

Three Little Pigs and Big Bad Wolf Family Costume: This is a great costume for a family or group of four. Three of the members can be the pigs and one the wolf. Usually the dad would be the big bad wolf, but you could put a spin on the costume and make the pigs evil and the wolf sweet and kind like the book The True Story of the Three Little Pigs; one of our favorite books!

A Hamburger/Sandwich or Wizard of Oz

Hamburger Family Costume: I love the idea of a hamburger or sandwich for a costume for the family! Each family member can be an ingredient, meat, cheese, tomato, lettuce, onion, etc and the parents can be the buns! You put them all together to make the hamburger. This could be a simple costume to make, too. As a funny twist, one of the family member can wear the Burger King mask. If you don't want to be a hamburger, you could try being a sandwich with the same idea!

Wizard of Oz Family Costume for a large family: This is a classic family costume and works great if you have a big family or group; Grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles all could join in making it a big family affair! Dorothy, Glenda the Good Witch, The Wicked Witch of the West, Scarecrow, TinMan, Wizard, Lion, and if you have Munchkins even better!

The Addams Family and Munsters

If your group would like to a bit scary this Halloween, how about dressing up as the Addams Family or the Munsters. The Addams family is one of my favorite costume ideas. Addams family character costumes: Morticia, Gomez, Wednesday, Uncle Fester, Lurch, Cousin It, and Pugsley. The Munsters character costumes: Herman Munster (Frankenstein), Lily Munster (vampire), Grandpa (vampire), Eddie Munster (werewolf), and Marilyn (normal girl).

Dressing up as a family can be a lot of fun and not that expensive if you can make the costumes yourself. I've included a bunch of links to websites that give instructions on making your own homemade costumes inexpensively. Happy Halloween!

Thanks for the new ideas! I have 6 kids and we have always dressed in coordination. My favorite year was 3 princesses, a knight, and a dragon. One year we did Clifford the Dog show and each was a dog from the show. One year we also did care bears. So much fun!!!

Great Hub, all three of my boys were dressed up as devils for their first halloween. Like you said its the easiest costume, we just dressed them in red and put little horns on their head, so adorable too. Voted up :)

That peacock costume is amazing! Your mother-in-law must have fun making these costumes for your kids. She is obviously talented. Your kids look so cute in those Halloween angel costumes. You have certainly given people some great ideas. That time will soon be upon us! Up and useful votes!

Em, the peacock feathers were attached to the belt/skirt in the back. It really was an amazing design my mother in law did. Thanks!

I love that you made her costume, ktrapp! All that matters is that she was happy. The best costumes are homemade. My mom use to make all of our costumes, too. I always loved having something original.

Thanks for the comments, Stephen and htodd!

Oh how I wish I had your mother-in-law's help about 11 years ago when my daughter was in first grade. We watched a show on the discovery channel about an octopus, she became obsessed with them, and then wanted to be one for Halloween. I did actually make an octopus costume somehow. I'm not sure if anyone even knew what she was, but she was really happy! Have fun with your kids trick-or-treating this year. It does go too quickly.

Thanks Simone and Randomcreative for the comments! It's always fun to dress as a theme!

Wavegirl, I'm sure you can just see Paul dressed as the devil. ;) How fun that your daughter's birthday is on Halloween! I bet that was interesting for you being in the hospital on Halloween having her! Cheers!

So many great ideas here! I must admit that Halloween is one of my most favorite holidays and it is an extra special day for me as it is my daughters birthday! Which only adds to the reasons that I am loving the family theme idea. The pics of the girls as Angels have to be one of the cutest I have ever seen. I can only imagine how perfect a Halloween it was with your hubby as the Devil!

Great ideas! Maybe when we have kids I'll be able to convince my husband to do something like this. :)

These are such fun ideas! I think I like the angels and devil costume idea the best... though perhaps it's because your photo is so adorable, everything else just pales in comparison!

Robin 8 months ago

Thanks, Happyboomernurse! Paul was a great sport being the devil. ;)

Wonderful ideas for themed costumes and I loved the family photos that you shared. I thought it was really cool that your husband dressed up as the devil when the kids were angels. Voted up across the board except for funny.

Thanks, Thranax!

Cardelean, I love the idea of a flower and bee! I agree on them having their own agenda; it really puts a wrinkle in things! ;) We'll see how we all do this year. Have your kids decided on costumes yet this year?

cardelean 8 months ago

Great costume ideas and super cute pictures! My daughter was a flower one year and my son was a bee. He was just an infant then so it was perfect. I've tried to do complimentary costumes since then but they just don't want to do it anymore! Ahhh, it's so tough when they can make decisions on their own! :)

Good ideas for family fun!
