Shamu made SeaWorld famous

www.seaworld.com Sea World Adventure Parks

SeaWorld Adventure Parks are located in Orlando, San Diego and San Antonio. Known for their Orca (Killer) Whale shows and most notably Shamu, SeaWorld is a water park that has one of the largest marine zoological collections in the world. Founded in 1964 by four UCLA graduates, SeaWorld was an instant success. SeaWorld got its start with 45 employees, dolphins, sea lions and two seawater aquariums. Today the park is owned by Busch Entertainment Corportation an Anheuser-Beusch Company.

If you're interested in other theme parks: Disneyland, Six Flags or Disneyworld, I wrote a few articles about them too; or check out Disney Parks, Disneyland Hotel, Disney on Ice, and Playhouse Disney. Thanks for reading!

My Favorite Attraction: Beluga Interaction Program

All of the SeaWorld Parks have a Beluga Interaction Program. Participants experience up-close interaction with the beautiful Beluga whales including touching, feeding and helping trainers with hand signals for the whales. A classroom presentation is given before the interaction with information on the belugas' habitat, biology and conservation efforts. The San Diego park includes interactions with walruses, seals and polar bears, too. The program lasts 90 minutes.

Cost:

$140.00-$160.00 per person plus park admission

$10.00 for an observer

Shamu and "Believe"

Shamu is SeaWorld's famous Orca/Killer Whale, and "Believe" is his new show. Shamu has become a household name. He has changed our perception of Killer Whales as "man-eating" beasts to intelligent, dynamic creatures that are worthy of our conservation efforts. Shamu has been entertaining and educating crowds since the 1960s and continues to be a main draw to the SeaWorld parks.

"Believe" , Shamu's new show, mixes together the behaviors of the Orca with music, choreography, multi-media. The shows theme is based on a child's belief that he/she is connected to the killer whale. A new stadium/set is being built that includes a two story stage, a powerful waterfall, underwater cameras, and LED screens.

Shamu pins his trainer to the bottom of the tank almost drowning him

Trainer pulled underwater by Kasatka the Killer Whale

On Nov. 15, 2006 during a SeaWorld show in San Diego, a SeaWorld trainer, Ken Peters, was pulled underwater twice by the beloved Orca and then let go. The incident occurred during the finale of the show where Peters was to shoot of the nose of the orca; instead the whale held him underwater for almost a minute. When they surfaced, Peters attempted to calm the whale by stroking her and was pulled under again and pinned to the bottom of the tank. Peters, a veteran trainer, was hospitalized with a broken foot by not seriously hurt in the incident.

I would like to personally thank SeaWorld for their tribute to Honoring Our Heroes. Memorial Day is usually when people remember the Veterans and what they have done for this country. Freedom is not free. SeaWorld pays tribute everyday to the servicemen of our great country whether they are on active duty status or past Veterans, inactive or retired. It is a tremendous feeling to have hundreds of complete strangers applaude and cheer for you just before the start of the Shamu show.

Seaworld has continued to do this over the years and does not forget nor ignore the efforts of our servicemen and what they have done for this great nation. I thank you on behalf of all of my fallen brothers who cannot thank you themselves

and for all Veterans who given a piece of their lives for the belief in freedom. Semper Fi!

With no disrespect to the late trainer and her now grieving family - WHAT DID YOU EXPECT!!! - if you keep a wild animal in a bathtub? You were warned and warned this would happen. DO NOT HARM THIS WHALE - THE WORLD IS WATCHING YOU

Leaving Tilikum in the show. You folks are nuts. You obviously care nothing for your staff.

If Tilikum were a dog, he'd have been put down by now.

Shame, shame, shame

Theme Parks like this one listed should close over 21 Whales have died at these theme park over the years and let us not forget the deaths to humans. The days of Circus's and side shows to make money is over.

Turn your so called education into saving Mammals not putting them into a Fish Bowl and expect them to perform to loud blashing music.

Why is there no documentation about the incident with Shamu in the San Diego Sea World in the late 1960's or by 1971 (I think). My mother took me, and Shamu followed me around the glass tank. Within a few days of this (or later that day, can't remember) Shamu took a trainer underwater. I also can not remember if the trainer was killed or injured- I want to say the trainer was killed. But the claim I've seen recently there haven't been previous injuries or near-death incidents is wrong: very wrong.
